Managing Medications Safely

A short system for keeping medication safe at home.

4 min readReviewed 9/4/2026

Medication mistakes send more older adults to the ER than falls. Use a weekly pill organizer filled every Sunday. Keep one master list — every drug, dose, and time — updated after every appointment. Take that list to every visit. Ask the pharmacist to review the full list once a year for interactions. Lock away any controlled or narcotic medications.

Checklist

  • Fill the pill organizer every Sunday
  • Update the master list after every visit
  • Bring the list to every appointment
  • Annual medication review with your pharmacist
  • Lock away narcotics
