Home Safety in 30 Minutes

Quick fixes that meaningfully lower the chance of a fall.

3 min readReviewed 9/4/2026

Falls are the single biggest cause of injury in older adults. A short sweep helps. Remove loose rugs. Add grab bars in the bathroom. Put a nightlight in the hall to the bathroom. Move commonly used items to waist height. Check that shoes have non-slip soles. Ask about a physical therapy home safety visit — Medicare often covers it.

Checklist

  • Remove loose rugs
  • Grab bars near toilet and shower
  • Nightlight from bed to bathroom
  • Non-slip footwear
  • Ask about a Medicare home safety PT visit
