Grief That Starts Before Loss

Understanding anticipatory grief and how to move through it.

5 min readReviewed 9/4/2026

It is normal to grieve someone who is still alive. This is called anticipatory grief. Signs include sadness, guilt, anger, and moments of numbness. You may grieve the person your loved one used to be, or the future you planned together. Naming it helps. Talking to a counselor, chaplain, or peer group helps more. This is not the same as being 'ready' for the loss — nobody ever is.

Checklist

  • Name the feeling — anticipatory grief is real
  • Talk to one trusted person this week
  • Ask your doctor for a grief counselor referral
  • Try a grief support group
