Signs You Are Burning Out

Nine warning signs of caregiver burnout, and one small thing to do this week.

3 min readReviewed 9/4/2026

Caregiver burnout is not a moral failure — it is a predictable response to sustained stress. Watch for: constant exhaustion, short temper, trouble sleeping, headaches, sadness that lingers, forgetting your own doctor visits, drinking more, feeling numb, or wishing it would just end. Any two of these for more than two weeks means it is time to bring in help. One small thing this week: block 30 minutes for yourself and put it on the calendar as if it were an appointment.

Checklist

  • Notice two or more signs? Tell one person
  • Book 30 minutes for yourself this week
  • Schedule your own primary-care visit
  • Call 211 if you feel unsafe
